MY ART - PAST & PRESENT

I have been creating my own art since I was very young, when I started the International Baccalaureate Diploma in High School my passion for art had to become more intense. As creating art was and still is a big part of my life, I have chosen to include this in my blog. This page is dedicated to looking at my art and showing the reasoning behind each piece as well as reflecting on myself. Usually, I don't like sharing my artwork with the public but I decided to start doing so with the help of this blog. Ever since I was young I have always advocated for women's rights and the right to be confident with our own bodies without them being sexualised. I have tried to include this theme in most of my work and look at what it means and has meant to be a woman.

"Broken Geometrics", Acrylic on Canvas, 69.85cm x 109cm, 2018.

[Sold]

For this piece I wanted to create something with colourful shapes, I had completed sketches and decided to complete this on a canvas. I wanted to create an effect that made the piece look like a stained glass mirror with someone looking through it.

However, I wanted it to have an abstract/cubist style. For this piece I wanted to portray the female face and incorporate broken pieces which represent pressure of beauty and the self esteem of a woman after being told they aren’t pretty enough.

"Neon Demons", Acrylic on Canvas, 91cm x 91cm, 2018.

This piece took me a long time to finish as I had trouble creating what I had visioned in my head. However, for one of my pieces I wanted to portray the contradicting support and hate with women, and how women either support one another or tear each other down. This is why I created a piece with women standing together but with one of the women positioned away from the group. This is why I picked the name “Neon Demons”, as it is very contradictory and represents the piece well.

"Unknown Reflections", Acrylic and Mirror on Canvas, 100.33cm x 60.96cm, 2018.

I had been doing trials with mirror for a while and decided to create a piece with them. This piece is very personal to me because it is very common for a teenage girl to look in the mirror and not like what they see and feel very insecure. This is why I portrayed a confident women in the middle of the piece with the broken pieces of mirror around her - almost attacking her. I wanted to portray the unknown reflections that attack your confidence and self esteem as a teenager growing up.

"Facing Fluorescence", Acrylic on Canvas, 69.85cm x 109cm, 2018.

I wanted to experiment in more depth with the human face and different colours. I wanted to look at bright colours to see how certain ones complement one another. I still wanted to include some trends from my other pieces and this is why I included shapes and bodies around the piece. Composition wise I wanted to create a piece that fit the whole canvas rather than having a central composition. The faces were inspired by Picasso’s African period and I created faces that I thought reflected this.

"Nirvana", Acrylic on Canvas 91cm x 91cm, 2017- 2018.

[Sold]

This piece was one of the first that I was proud of and spent a lot of time on trying to perfect. With this I was trying to experiment with different backgrounds and creating a contrast between the background and foreground. I did this by

creating darker colours in the background and lighter colours in the foreground. The figure was inspired by my interest into distortion and this also connected with the unrealistic bodies and photo shopping of women to make them fit the current beauty trends.

"21st Century Beings", Acrylic on Canvas, 76.2 cm x 101.6cm, 2017-2018

[Sold]

The 21st century has come a long way in trying to extinguish social constructs and society’s definition of beauty. I wanted to portray this in my piece by representing a confident woman who isn’t ashamed of her body, hence the bright colours.

" Cycle of Death and Rebirth", Acrylic on Canvas, 69.85cm x 109cm, 2018.

[Sold]

In this piece I really wanted to input a cultural and religious theme, I decided to introduce Indian culture and the belief of rebirth after an individual has died. I was interested in doing this because I am fascinated with the idea of reincarnation and being born again. I depicted this through the element of line. Within the piece are hidden humans and the lines represent the life one may live until they die and continue on again: the process of reincarnation.

"Triangular Interlude", Acrylic on Canvas, 100.33cm x 60.96cm, 2017-2018.

This was one of the first pieces I created with bright colours, previously a lot of my work had been dark and I decided to change it to create a more vibrant piece. The contrast in colours and elements of art give the piece depth and help distinguish between the background and foreground. My inspiration for this piece was Richard Phillips and the illusions he creates in his pieces.

"Misconceived or Judged", Plaster and Acrylic on Canvas, 59.69cm x 100.33cm, 2018.

With this piece I used a different medium: Plaster of Paris. This piece really helped me to experiment and learn about different materials while also creating better work. The colours on the body represent different factors of a female and how she is more than just her body. I wanted to portray the theme of objectification, this is why I used the colours to represent the mind of the woman on a female body – to show how the mind is overlooked and the body is prioritized.

"Les Trois Femmes Abstraites", Acrylic on Plaster of Paris, 132.8cm x 127cm, 2018

This sculpture was a continuation of my piece called “Misconceived and Judged”, I wanted to create the same type of sculpture but make them more 3D. I did this by using a different type of Plaster which made the sculpture come out stronger and not flat. The idea is the same as “Misconceived and Judged”, however this time I wanted to create more than one woman and show this idea of powerful, intelligent women.

"Green Faces", Acrylic on Canvas, 2021

[Sold]

This piece was extremely improvised, I wanted to create a monochrome piece using green. When I finished it I felt like something was missing which is why I added the red lips which I think make the piece bold.

"Candy-Cane Body", Acrylic on Canvas, 2020

{Left}

"Multicoloured Girl", Acrylic on Canvas, 2020

{Right}

I was wanting to connect back to my original paintings that I made in high school which was what inspired these pieces. I had sketched a few examples of what I wanted the body to look like and then I made a few different paintings with different colours. The next one I would wanted to do would be a large painting with multiple bodies of the same sketch.

"Pink and Blue Body", Acrylic on Canvas, 2021

"Pink, Red and Green Body", Acrylic on Canvas, 2021

{Right} [Sold]

These pieces were an extension of the previous ones but I wanted to do them without the black outline which worked out quite well and I preferred using two colours to create a monochrome affect and not having a black outline.

"C.B", Acrylic on Canvas, 2018

[Sold]

This was a piece I also did in high school which was based off a sketch I did for a Lino piece to create prints. I found it during the 2020 lockdown and touched it up and then sold it in 2021.
